Teaching Italian Culture Conference

The Department of Italian at Georgetown University together with the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington D.C. invites proposals for a conference titled Teaching Italian Culture. The one-day conference will take place on October 19th 2013 during Italian Language Week as part of a series of events celebrating the Year of Italian Culture in the United States. The purpose of this conference is to share innovative approaches and pedagogical strategies for teaching Italian culture at both the high school and university levels (in particular for AP courses).
We invite proposals from faculty and graduate students in Italian studies who are experienced in teaching, creating course materials, and/or developing curricula. Instructors who incorporate culture into their lower division language courses are encouraged to participate, as are scholars whose research covers areas of Italian popular culture.
Topics may include but are not limited to:
• using popular culture materials in content-based language instruction
• developing new pedagogical approaches to designing and teaching courses on Italian TV, newspapers, social media
• creating on-line materials or databases for instructional purposes
• developing modules based on Italian film, television, music, sports or video games in courses not specific to popular culture
Please send proposals of 250 words for a 20 minute presentation to italiancultureconf@georgetown.edu by April 30th.
